Two operators of the Raipura Upazila Election Office in Narsingdi have been arrested on charges of selling National Identity Card (NID) information. They used to correct and transfer National Identity Card information through brokers and in exchange for money. In the last six months, there have been unusual transactions of Tk 14 lakh on the bKash number of the two.

The arrested persons are Ashikul Alam, scanning operator of the Raipura Upazila Election Office, and Nahidul Islam, data entry operator. After a day-long investigation yesterday, Wednesday, the upazila’s acting election officer, Deen Mohammad Russell, made this known at a press conference at around 8 pm at the upazila election office. The press conference was told that two operators of the Raipura Upazila Election Office were accused of illegally selling National Identity Card information through brokers and in exchange for money. The National Identity Registration Division of the Election Commission formed a four-member committee to investigate this incident. The committee was headed by Saad Waiz Tanvir, IT Director of the Commission’s IDEA Project. Yesterday, the members of the investigation committee went to the upazila election office and investigated and found the truth of the allegations. As the allegations were proven, they were handed over to the police station.

Saad Waiz Tanvir said that the accused Ashik and Nahidul had embezzled lakhs of taka by selling NID information. Analysis of their bKash numbers showed that there were unusual transactions of Tk 14 lakh in the last 6 months. Out of this, evidence of Tk 12 lakh transactions was found only in Ashikul Alam’s bKash number. The two accused employees admitted that they received this money by correcting NID and handing over secret information through various brokers.

When asked, Raipura Upazila Election Officer-in-Charge Deen Mohammad Russell said, “They were selling National Identity Card (NID) information to various people in exchange for money through two brokers. As the allegations were proven, I filed a written complaint against them last night.”

Raipura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Adil Mahmud said that the written complaint given by the election officer in this incident has been registered as a case. They will be arrested and sent to court today.
